The Musée Gustave Moreau, in partnership with the Manufactures nationales, presents an exhibition focused on the restoration of a large, previously unseen drawing by Gustave Moreau for La Sirène et le Poète.
As part of the bicentennial of Moreau’s birth (April 6, 1826) and alongside the Salon du dessin, the exhibition revisits the 1894 commission of a tapestry cartoon for the Manufacture des Gobelins, completed for weaving in 1899.
The monumental drawing conveys the artist’s Symbolist vision with decorative refinement and dreamlike mystery.
Rediscovered in 2023 during an inventory at the Mobilier national, this restored drawing allows the museum to also display preparatory works related to the tapestry.
