The Tiepolos i
n private collections,
at the Éric Coatalem gallery
Giambattista, Giandomenico and Lorenzo Tiepolo: the family of virtuoso Venetian artists is in the spotlight at the Éric Coatalem Gallery until 3 April.
More than 50 works have been brought together thanks to the collaboration of 22 collectors from France and abroad.
The Tiepolos: a legacy of virtuosity
In 18th-century Venice, the Tiepolos stood out from Guardi and Canaletto with their incisive style and their way of sculpting light with subtle ink washes, marvellous red chalk drawings, masterful canvases and frescoes.
Giambattista Tiepolo left behind a prolific body of work, mainly religious and mythological. He was also the first to depict characters dressed as Punchinellos.
His eldest son, Giandomenico, made the Punchinello theme the focus of around a hundred drawings. He also devoted himself extensively to the New Testament, with a series of more than 300 sheets.
Lorenzo, who died at the age of 30 after a career spent mainly in Spain, remains less well known. Although he has remained in the shadow of his father and brother’s genius, he nevertheless reveals undeniable talent.

from 22 collectors
‘Once again, thanks to the immense generosity of 22 collectors, both French and foreign, we have been able to bring together more than 50 works by these three wonderful artists and thus have the chance to admire their techniques, their virtuosity and their boundless imaginations.’
Excerpt from the introduction to the exhibition catalogue
This exhibition, already hailed by the press as ‘worthy of a museum’ *, is a must-see event this spring.
Comprising mainly works on paper, the exhibition also includes a few oil paintings on canvas and is accompanied by a bilingual catalogue featuring two essays and notes on each work.
Scheduled to run until 3 April, it coincides with Drawing Week and the Salon du dessin, which takes place from 25 to 30 March, in which the Éric Coatalem Gallery is participating.
